Local or off-strip bars

Hi guys,

We are couple of guys from Sweden that are coming to town next week. One of the things that I enjoy a lot when travelling in the US is to meet ';real'; people, the people that caters and pampers to you. The people who sells shoes to the ones who caters and pampers to you and the people - well, you know what I mean. I%26#39;ve been to the states a lot of times and I have never - ever - had a bad experience when meeting the ';real'; people (except for one particular encounter at the bus station in Pittsburgh PA when I was 19 and I will not go into that now...)

Instead, everyone that I have met and actually had a conversation with has turned out to be really nice (I have even been invited home to dinner on occassion by families). So, where can I go and meet real people in Vegas? Since I am Swedish (thus have an affinity for booze) I prefer the local bars. Can anyone suggest good, local bars? Not too way off strip, if that is possible.

Local or off-strip bars

Professor Frescos and Gee Bees are just a couple of miles south of the airport on Las Vegas Blvd. Nice places with lots of nice locals and looser machines with good food also,, PTs pubs are located all over the valley and are local hangouts,,,,I won quite a bit of money there also on the multiple play video poker,,,have fun.......

There are ';real'; people in every bar in Las Vegas. Most of the people in casino bars on the Strip are going to be real.

If you have a foot fetish or some other need to seek out people who sell shoes I recommend you plan your trip around an appropriate convention lol.

Hey Irish,

Apologies, I was trying to exemplify. What I meant by using the term ';real'; people was the average joes and jills that live in vegas.

Norgelady -

I love how you accuse someone of trying to be %26#39;interlectual%26#39; and can%26#39;t even spell the word properly.

Great call.

How%26#39;s this for a start.

The following are all very informal, some are proper dives but all are a lot of fun.

The Freakin Frog on Maryland near UNLV.

Double Down, said to be 鈥淭he Happiest Place on Earth鈥?/p>

Champagne Cafe on Maryland near Twain.

Huntridge on Maryland near Charleston.

Dino鈥檚 on LV Blvd north of the Strat.

Gabe鈥檚 on North Las Vegas Blvd, north of Downtown, across from the Silver Nugget.

Stage Door, kind of behind Bill鈥檚 Gambling Hall.

Ice House on Main south of Downtown.

Many bars near the Fremont Street Experience (FSE).

Bunkhouse on 11th between Fremont and Carson.

The Atomic about 900 East Fremont, tell them I sent you.

The trendy Griffin and Beauty Bar both just east of the FSE.

Hogs and Heifers on Third just north of FSE.

Mickey Finz and Hennessey and Julian鈥檚 all three at the end of the FSE.

Every casino has at least one bar, some are fun dives like the Gold Spike and Western downtown or Aztec across from the Strat and some are more high class, depending on the casino.

If you are invited home by some of the friendly locals at these places, an unwelcome and unlawful service fee may be involved. Use caution

Hi travhast-

I know what you are talking about, but I think Vegas is kind of an exception. The whole place exists more or less to cater to tourists, unlike a ';real'; city like NY or San Francisco. This isn%26#39;t a bad thing, Vegas is just unlike any other US city. Enjoy it for the tacky tourist mecca that it is!

There were a few suggestions for ';local'; bars that you may enjoy, but have no fear just being another tourist in Vegas, it is one of the rare places where it is not only OK but expected! You will meet lots of other ';real'; tourists from all over the US and the world while you are visiting. Have fun!

P.S. I visited Sweden after meeting a really cool Swede here in Boston and keeping in touch for a while. It was my first trip to Europe and I enjoyed it very much!

Travhast, I like the way you think. As an American, I, like others, tend to drive the big interstate highway system and miss a lot of local flavor, but as a motorcyclist, I also ride the roads less traveled and it%26#39;s these trips that are always the best. Local food, local culture and local conversation can be much more entertaining than fake volcanos and fountains on steroids.

When I opened this thread, my intention was to steer you in Chitowngambler%26#39;s direction since he is easily the most experienced on this forum in what you are looking for. Of course I see that he has already posted a very good list for you so I have nothing to add except that I thank you for enjoying the REAL America.
