rock and roll

are there any good rock and roll bars/casinos to go to if you dont gamble and your wife does?

I would rather sit and listen to music

rock and roll

How about Bill%26#39;s during the Big Elvis show?

rock and roll

Le Cabaret @ Paris

The Piano Bar @ Harrahs.

Your wife can play and you are close to the casino area.

Malebird

The Hard Rock. They play the best music of any casino, by far. Your wife can gamble, you can sit at the center bar, have a few drinks and people watch. If you go at night, the bimbo to normal person ratio is through the roof.

  • Question on Tipping

In my country, we seldom need to tip. Only restaurants charge a 10% service charge to the bill, so I%26#39;m a little worried about tipping.

I have read posts on tipping and now know how should I tip certain people, but still have a few questions.

    1) Do I need to tip the front desk clerks if I ask them to offer me a high floor room and they do?

    2) Do I need to tip the concierges if I ask them for information?

    3) When do I need to tip the bellboy? Is it when I deposit my baggage or when I retrieve it? It might not be the same person.

How much should I tip the above persons.

    Thanks much!

    Question on Tipping

If you search for ';tipping'; you%26#39;ll find a slew of posts about it.

You only need to tip the front desk clerk if you feel they went out of their way to put you on a higher floor, or gave you a view or an upgrade. Even then, it is totally at your discretion. The normal tip is $20

You do not need to tip the conceirge unless they moved heaven and earth to do something for you. Doling out information is their job. If they arrange a tour, get show tickets, etc. for you, then you would tip them. Again, the normal tip would be $20.

You tip the bellman when you pick up your bags, not when you drop them off. You%26#39;d tip the person who brings the bags to your room.

    Bellman get $2-3 per bag.

    Hope that helps!

    Question on Tipping

    model--

Very classy reply, I am sure that answers Moonlady%26#39;s simple question.

    1) Do I need to tip the front desk clerks if I ask them to offer me a high floor room and they do?

    - A high floor room is usually the same cost as a low floor room. A modest tip maybe in order if they are very polite and have to go out of the way to accomodate you but don%26#39;t go crazy over it, either. If they are putting you in a room that is a higher class than what you paid for, then a tip is a must.

    2) Do I need to tip the concierges if I ask them for information?

    - No tip for just answering questions. Tip if they are making reservations for you and even more if they are doing something like getting you seats to sold out restaurants or shows.

    3) When do I need to tip the bellboy? Is it when I deposit my baggage or when I retrieve it? It might not be the same person.

    - My personal inclination would be to only tip when the bags are delivered. However, these guys apparently do not pool tips so you are supposed to tip when you deposit and when you retrieve. I would tip a bellman who actually delivers luggage to a room than I would one who simply checks my bags, though.

    Ra Sushi Bar

    Hello All,

First time in Vegas this weekend and some friends have made a reservation at Ra Sushi Bar. Just curious what to expect. I%26#39;ve seen mixed reviews on the food but I%26#39;m more curious about the atmosphere. Is it more like a club or more like a restaurant? Also, I%26#39;ve seen it%26#39;s not too expensive - true? Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Ra Sushi Bar

    Bring lots of money.

    Ra Sushi Bar

    Oh no - why?

    Here%26#39;s a menu link with prices so you can decide- people have different ideas of ';not too expensive.';

    http://www.rasushi.com/pdf/raDinner.pdf

RA is a concept owned by Benihana.. While I haven%26#39;t gone to the RA in vegas, I go to the RA in my hometown and its always packed. A fairly hip and trendy spot with a big focus on the bar area. You almost feel like you%26#39;re in a club. The Las Vegas roll is awesome, one of my favorite rolls anywhere!! I%26#39;d say their food is fairly good.. not excellent but not bad.

    New Pool at MGM??

Was talking to someone last night and he said that MGM has a new ';Adult%26#39;s only'; pool that opened last week. Live DJ, dance music, etc...Anyone have information on it? Said it was free to MGM guests $20 for others?? Just wondering...staying at MGM Sat and Sun and can%26#39;t wait to find out!!

    New Pool at MGM??

Would also like to know about this as we are out there on Friday! Is it Wet Republic?

    New Pool at MGM??

Its called Wet Republic - enter a search on the Vegas TA Forum and you%26#39;ll find a number of posts about the latest ';ultra'; pool experience offered at MGM.

    www.mgmgrand.com/amenities/wet-republic.aspx

They also have a wet republic website which basically tells you to call for more information:

    www.wetrepublic.com

    Have a great trip!

FYI--They have been running their ';soft opening'; the past two weeks. Friday is slated as their ';Grand Opening';. Supposed to be some type of surprise guests according to one website. If you intend to go Friday, I would suggest early arrival.

Ahhhhhhhhh! We%26#39;re already booked for this summer. Too bad you can%26#39;t go back and apply this rate retroactivly. Would have saved a bundle.

bill's gambling hall or bally's??? hubby's 1st time to lv

my husband and i are going to vegas on 4th june 08.

this will be my 3rd time in vegas but my husbands 1st, we are both mibble 30%26#39;s.

i have booked bill%26#39;s but can now get classic room and bally%26#39;s for $40 more.

    now confused where to stay.

which do you think is the better to stay in???

    many thanks for your help

bill's gambling hall or bally's??? hubby's 1st time to lv

    Tanya

keep your reservations at Bills, it is perfect for a 1st timer. Great location but small enough that it doesn%26#39;t feel too intimidating. Rooms are very nice and you can get some superb views.

The only downside is that lack of a pool but you are allowed to use the one next door FOC.

I would stay a Bills even if it was the same price as Bally%26#39;s, for $40 less you have a bargain.

    Have fun

bill's gambling hall or bally's??? hubby's 1st time to lv

meant to add i have stayed at strat and luxor before.

decided to choose more central location thistime.

i would also like to thank everyone for all the advice.

previous times i have been to vegas i have booked hotel through agent not direct and have ended up paying more.

i have booked direct with bill%26#39;s this time and price has dropped by $80 all ready.

    so thank you all

    Bally%26#39;s has rooms for $50 on June 4 %26amp; 5. I doubt you%26#39;re paying $10/night at Bill%26#39;s! It does go up to $130 on the 6th.

Bill%26#39;s and Bally%26#39;s are right across the street from each other. I would clarify whether Bill%26#39;s guests can still use the Flamingo Pool - not having a pool in June would be a dealbreaker for me.

i%26#39;m staying 6 nights the room at bally%26#39;s is $40 more then bill%26#39;s for the 6 nights.

at mo paying $489 for bill%26#39;s for the 6 nights.

have checked and can use flamingo pool.

Oh, I thought you meant $40 a night! Keep your reservation at Bill%26#39;s.

Bill%26#39;s is my choice plan and simple. I agree with the poster that I would stay at Bill%26#39;s even if the rates were the same.

  • How to put my comforter in to its cover properly
  • How long do you spend at a buffet.

I was just wondering how long people spend at a buffet, how much food can you actually stuff in yourself, do you feel you get good value for what you can eat.I usually go to one in the afternoon, as the breakfast ones are wasted on me.How many times do you go up to get stuff.Im just being nosey as Im always looking at what other people have on their plates lol!!

How long do you spend at a buffet.

Hahah, I was wondering the same, I started a thread last week about this :)

How many times do you go up?

How long do you spend at a buffet.

I don%26#39;t spend long at all. I always get excited about all the wonderful food on offer and make sure I don%26#39;t eat much during the day so that I will be able to get my money%26#39;s worth. It never happens though-one plate and I%26#39;m full up!! Maybe with room for a small dessert. I think I maybe drink too much soda with my food which fills me up more than the actual food.

What I like about buffets is that they give you a chance to try all the different foods that you wouldn%26#39;t normally order if you just went to a restraunt. I am one of those people that hate ordering something new and not liking it and then having to pay for it, whilst still being hungry. My hubby is also a picky eater who can%26#39;t seem to finish a plateful of just one type of meal, but at the buffets in LV he can easily get up and go back 4 or 6 times for small amounts of different things. Plus with the exchange rate at the moment they are a real bargain.

I normally manage about 3 trips but even though I%26#39;m a meat lover I try to stay away from it as it fills me up too quickly.

I normally go Asian first, then veg and small amount of meat, then a plate of crabs legs and other seafood. Dessert often defeats me and I usually only have one drink.

4 hours, 5 full plates is a good value for the price...

5 full plates and one french girl for dessert...

    As long as it takes!

Im with insomniac06. I try my hardest to save up and get super hungry, but I guess my stomach shrinks from not eating all day long so I make a salad trip and a meat or sushi trip and its over.

The last time we went for 10 nights, I got really used to eating alot, I gained 4lbs on our trip but my husband gained over 10lbs...hehehehe

Biscuits and gravy, I dont understand it, but he loves it...ugh. 10 mornings of that will put weight on anyone.

    stace

I usually go up four times once for small salady food, then i would get picky food like ribs, chicken wings etc, then I get up for my main dinner which could be anything as im not fussy, then I have dessert I usually make myself sick with these trying a bit of everything.I then get a cup of tea or should I say hot water and I bring my own british teabag! You cant beat that to end it off.I dont drink much soda through my buffet so thats why I prob can eat more frequent, I spend about hour and a half, I have to say the most relaxing and enjoyable was monte carlo, the most rushed one although enjoyable was paris, the server was not the most pleasant which doesnt help any.I like to take my time and not feel too rushed, can anyone recommend any other relaxing buffets, that arent too pricy eg wynn.Although i do wana try that some time on my forthcoming trip as I have heard its great.

  • Luxor Tower Luxury Suite, thinking of upgrading.

Anyone care to share thoughts on upgrading to one of these suites upon checkin?

    Comment on the suites themselves?

Luxor Tower Luxury Suite, thinking of upgrading.

    Bump

Luxor Tower Luxury Suite, thinking of upgrading.

    Here%26#39;s a silly question....what does ';bump'; mean??

I%26#39;ve seen it here many times, yet have no clue what it means?

Since no one has commented, I%26#39;ll offer my two cents! We stayed at Luxor on our first visit to Vegas in 2002. We arrived late on a Saturday night and they did not have any king n/s rooms left. To make up for getting a smoking room, the woman at check-in upgraded us to a 1 bdrm suite. From what I can see on their website, our room looked the same as the ';Luxury Suite';. Anyway, we loved the room! It was at the end of the hall, so it was a longer walk back to the room, but it was awesome to have a separate bedroom, a huge marble %26amp; tile bathroom, a sitting area and dining/wetbar area. It didn%26#39;t even smell like smoke even though there was an ashtray on the table. I can%26#39;t comment on the cost of the upgrade, but I can say that I thought the room was great and if we stay at Luxor again I would consider upgrading if it wasn%26#39;t too expensive.

';bump'; is just a way of keeping your post on the first page of the forum so that hopefully someone will respond to your question.

We stayed in the suites back a couple of years ago. They were pretty nice. Was great having a mini frig in the room.

I guess it comes down to the cost. We upgraded to the suite for $25/night and $50/night on Friday and Saturday. Our base was free for that trip. Do not think I would do it for a big dollar difference.

Have never stayed at Luxor, can%26#39;t help you there! Did you decide on LAX or Studio 54? Hope you guys have a fantastic time golfing and enjoying! I know my husband looks forward to his guy%26#39;s golf trip all year, as I look forward to my girl%26#39;s vegas trip! Weather seems to be going up and down, hope it goes up some more! Have a safe flight and a great trip! Leave for ORD at 5 am tomorrow, can%26#39;t wait!!

We will be close behind....... Friday flight departs O%26#39;Hare at 8:30.

Sun, golf, pools, drinks, food, gambling....... What else could anyone want??!! LOL

I think you are a day behind. You leave Friday, right? We are tomorrow (Thursday). Friend flies from Des Moines to ORD, then we both get on the same flight and head out. Should be a fun flight. A few bloody mary%26#39;s and catching up, then arriving in Vegas by 10 am. What more could you ask for?!

Hi all, a couple of months ago I asked about pools on the strip. I got some very helpful answers.

Now I%26#39;m wondering....going Memorial Day weekend, I understand which hotels have the best pools; BUT which ones will I be most likely to show up at 10 or 11am and actually get a lounge chair in the sun without reserving a cabana??? Right now I have reservations at Mandalay Bay, Caesar%26#39;s and NYNY (I know the pool sucks, but I like the hotel/casino atmosphere). I would prefer a relatively mellow pool experience...no loud techno music/bass booming, minimal young children, drinks accessible, but not exhorbitantly overpriced...Right now room budget for 3 night is $700-$900 for stay.

    thanks in advance!

Of the choices you list, I think you%26#39;d like Caesar%26#39;s best. You might also want to look at Palazzo if it%26#39;s within your budget.

    Use of Pools around town.

    Fellow Vegas folk.

My friend and I are going to the Orleans at the end of May, now the Orleans seems to have a decent pool, BUT we want a fantastic pool experience.

Which of the awesome Resort pools allow outside guests to use their facilities???

Id love to hear...any of the Mandalay, Mirage %26amp; I cant remember whether its Trop or Flamingo that has a great pool. We would be happy to pay for the privelege.

    Stace

    Use of Pools around town.

Well, I know of 3 fantastic pools which only allow their guests to use - Bellagio, Caesars and Wynn.

Flamingo and Trop I don%26#39;t know about. Mandalay Bay and MGM have great pools, too, but I don%26#39;t know if they are open to the public.

I think I read that Hard Rock is the only hotel which opens its pool to the public.

    Use of Pools around town.

None of the pools allow anyone but hotel guests to routinely use their pools. Hard Rock has a beach party or whatever that allows visitors in during certain hours (Sunday afternoons?) for a price.

If you want a great pool, stay at the hotel that is offering it. Otherwise, don%26#39;t expect to get in.

People may comment that they have gotten in here or there. But the reality is you probably won%26#39;t sneak in successfully. And if you do, it%26#39;s pretty low class.

Last summer the Rio allowed non-guests to pay a daily fee, $5 weekdays, $10 weekends.

Call them and ask if they have the same policy this year.

I wouldn%26#39;t call it awesome, maybe it would be to you.

Curious, is there anywhere else that you can pay to use another hotel%26#39;s pool? It never occurred to me to do it but maybe you can in other places.

You can use Bare (the tops optional pool) at the Mirage. They charge $40 for men and $20 for women on the week-ends and $20 for men and $10 for women on weekdays.

OOooo thank you %26amp; I have heard that the Mirage has a nice pool area.

I wasnt going to post this, was just going to send a personal message to Damama but I decided to post it here.

Many times I have gone on vacation %26amp; want to stay where the action is ';downtown anywhere'; but there will be a ';waterpark'; hotel or spa resort somewhere out of the core vacation area, most of the time they will have a non guest rate and you can usually go during off times, Monday - Thursday.

I have done this at many many spas %26amp; water parks around the world (Hawaii, California, Colorado, Vancover, Victoria, Banff, Calgary, Toronto, Florida, Tokyo %26amp; Niagara Falls), I was shocked that you cant do it in Vegas as a rule.

I guess Im still waiting to find out that I can...we will try the Mirage.

    Stace

Stace - just so you know, access to Bare at Mirage does not give you access to the rest of their pool area (just to the topless pool) - so you may want to think about paying for it, because while it is nice, it is not the topical/waterfall/bridge over the pool area they show on the website.

Most hotels don%26#39;t let you use the pool. Last year we used the Rio pool several times just for a change, and didn%26#39;t have to pay - but it was empty really compared to other pool areas In Vegas. Mirage pool is great, the hotel also is a good place to stay - I would book for there.

The worst the pool the easier it is to sneak in. Some places only check on weekends.

TR 04/14-17, Part 6/7 of 7 (Homeward Bound and Comments)

    See reply.

I%26#39;ve decided to combine parts 6 and 7 into this final installment. I apologize for being so long-winded . . . I like to read details in trip reports . . . so that%26#39;s the way I write as well. Also . . . you people MIGHT not be as bored by my Vegas ramblings as my ';real life'; friends. Or . . . at least . . . you don%26#39;t have to listen to me . . . just close the window :)!

TR 04/14-17, Part 6/7 of 7 (Homeward Bound and Comments)

Not much to report here since we again had an early flight. Our cab back to the airport was $13. Check in was no problem, but even at 7 a.m. there was a long line at security . . . probably the longest we鈥檝e ever seen. No problems though.

Hubby grabbed a breakfast sandwich and milk at Burger King ($8). I tried a breakfast sandwich from Quiznos ($4 . . . and very good) and Starbucks coffee ($3). I need to comment on Starbucks. I have never seen such slow service at a Starbucks . . . holy smokes! But . . . there was no hurry . . . I had nowhere to be for an hour!

Sun Country proved reliable again. The flight left on time and we sadly left the city of lights behind us . . . until next time.

Many have asked here how much cash to bring. We charge everything possible to our room or our credit card. We are low-limit gamblers. This trip we used only $375 cash.

Reading back over my report, it seems sprinkled with disappointment. Yeah . . . I guess it was . . . but certainly nothing bad enough to spoil our trip. We had a great time. When do I leave again?????

TR 04/14-17, Part 6/7 of 7 (Homeward Bound and Comments)

Thanks for your report. I especially appreciated the details on MGM as we are booked there in a few weeks. I have been seriously debating changing though because I just don%26#39;t like big hotels! We might stick it out. Too bad you didn%26#39;t get that suite, but it sounds like you still enjoyed your trip and made the best of it.

    Thanks again!

Thanks for taking the time to post this great TR, i enjoyed reading and couldn%26#39;t wait to get to the next part(s)

Not getting the spa suite may have been a bummer but hey for $69 you still got a great deal !!!

    Thanks again

I appreciate the details of your trip, and thanks for sharing with us!!!

Thanks for your most interesting trip report. Sorry you missed out on that suite - once told you would get it I would have been very upset, but then the price you paid was excellent so you really can%26#39;t complain.

Thanks for the trip report it was very enjoyable.

I%26#39;ve just read through all of the installments of your report, coffee! Once again a very good and well written one, thank you! I%26#39;m one that enjoys reading details so it was much appreciated.

I%26#39;m like you, the beds in the Grand Tower are comfortable but not the best I%26#39;ve ever slept in and I also agree with you about the towels, tub and shower head/water pressure in the bathrooms.

The relaxing times at the pool sounded wonderful to me and so glad they have adult pools for those who prefer to not be at pools with children.

One thing, no lemon drop martini%26#39;s this trip? ;-)

Not one, Gabby! Can you believe it?

They aren%26#39;t offered on the casino floor . . . nor the pool . . . not my thing with food . . . but oh . . . had the Fontana or Zuri been open!! :)

Thanks for sharing! I like the ';long-winded'; ones=) Gives me something to do at work, lol

Actually this is the perfect length TR for me. Each segment was not too long, and I like it written on seperate threads. Sometimes when it%26#39;s on one thread I don%26#39;t know if I%26#39;ve read the whole report, or if the OP has returned to extend the report, or it%26#39;s just others responding to the report.

Thanks for taking the time to share =)

Or you could bid on Priceline. Good luck!

I did priceline in March and got the Venetian for $140 per night. I liked it a lot. I also like Hotwire a lot as well. You can figure out pretty easily what hotel they%26#39;re showing you by matching up dollar saved and geographic location.

You can go to Harrah%26#39;s website, %26amp; look under their package deals or special promo%26#39;s at

    www.harrahs.com

Have a great trip in Vegas, lucky you !!!!!

Nowadays, hotels will match or beat the prices of the travel sites. They are cutting out the middleman and the old Harrahs (now named Caesars) is especially aggressive about beating the prices.

If you want to save money, get the best deal you can on any of the travel sites and call the hotel. Tell them where you got the deal and ask them to match or beat it.

The advice people are giving you was definitely true years ago. Not today.

flyinthesoup, I%26#39;m waiting eagerly to learn how you think a Vegas hotel is going to be able to beat the airfare price from a third party%26#39;s hotel/air package. Bookign airfare separately can cost more than the room itself sometimes.

  • Landing in vegas at 7pm

I am coming to Vegas from New York and we land at 7pm on a sat. Can any1 please tell me how long it roughly takes from landing and collecting bags to getting to the stratosphere? We are wanting to visit downtown that night will we have enough time to go see it?

    Thanks

    Landing in vegas at 7pm

Sure, downtown is open 24 hours..:)

The light show goes every hour with last show at either 23:00 or Midnight, can%26#39;t recall which.

Biggest issue is your incoming flight - is this an internal US flight, or are you arriving from the UK and have to do Immigration and Customs?

Also, how are you gettng to the Strat? Hire car? Taxi? Shuttle?

    Landing in vegas at 7pm

Sorry, missed the part about ';coming from New York';. So no Customs/Immigration...if you%26#39;re lucky you%26#39;ll have bags collected within 30 minutes after you land, but my experience is that it often takes a bit longer in Las Vegas.

So without knowing mode of tranport, either way you%26#39;d be at the Strat by 9:00 at the latest I would imagine.

We few in on US Air around 7PM and had our bags by the time we stopped at the restroom and walked to pick them up. Got a cab immediatly and were at the Flamingo by 7:45 and in our room by 8. But it can be hit or miss based on the attitude of the baggage handlers.

I wouldnt make any important reservations that first night. I usually fly in on a flight from new york that lands in Vegas at 7ish on saturdays. Good chance you will get there late. The airports in this area - ewr, jfk, lga notorious for backups on saturday afternoons.

    Whats the rush???????

Fremont street will be there the next day.

Relax, drink, adjust too the time difference.

We are going to get a taxi from the airport to hotel. Last time I came to vegas i never went to DT and always wanted to see it, but as we are only there for 5 nights we have planned to go to a different club each night.

Also when we are exploring the strip is it best to split it up in2 three days?

Um, there%26#39;s no way you can see all of the Strip in one day.

    Vegas in August

We are taking our 85 year mother to Vegas in August. She%26#39; a ';youthful'; 85. Would like to stay on the strip. Suggestions where walking won%26#39;t be a problem? (For me, I%26#39;m 52, not Mom). Any shows to suggest? She isn%26#39;t offended by anything!

    Vegas in August

You are going to be walking, walking, walking no matter where you are in Vegas! Getting to other casinos, then getting inside them and finally getting to where you are going once inside usually involves a hike!!! If you are just talking about getting from your room to the casino or strip- try Bill%26#39;s Gambling Hall and Saloon. It is a very nice basic hotel with rooms that are very comfortable, clean and safe. It has a very efficient, friendly and helpful staff. You can%26#39;t beat the location- it is very centrally located. But be prepared to do more walking than you can even imagine. You do realize it is going to be about 105 in August, right?

If you have never seen a Cirque show-I would suggest Mystere. To me it has the most WOW moments. I have seen O, Ka, Love and Mystere. Mystere continues to be my favorite. Love is also great but it isn%26#39;t a typical CDS show- the emphasis is on the Beatles music rather than the acrobats.

    Vegas in August

Ballys is great, right in a perfect spot on the strip and directly connected to the Paris indoors. Also you have access to the tram. Planet hollywood is right next door and the shuttle to the Rio is right outside of the Paris.

    Cheers,

You should probably stick to center strip if walking is a concern for your mom.

Maybe consider Paris, Bellagio, or Venetian. They are all central, very nice, good ventilation, and are not spots where the crazy 20 somethings normally stay (we can%26#39;t afford it!).

I remember going with my Grandma when she was in her late 80s. She loved Vegas. We usually tried to go stick to the mega resorts where there is a ton to do, that way we%26#39;re all entertained and don%26#39;t have to venture out constantly.

85 years old and August in Vegas can be a problem. I%26#39;d stay in a really big resort so you won%26#39;t have to leave much. Depends on your budget where to stay. Bally%26#39;s and Paris are connected so you don%26#39;t have to go outside in the desert heat. It%26#39;s hot in Vegas in August. HOT.

Bellagio is nice or Caesars. Caesars is big and you%26#39;ll never have to leave their property.

One thing to consider is the use of a mobility scooter. Most major hotels have scooters for rent but call to confirm where ever you are staying.

Rent is usually $40 for a single day and $20 a day when for a 4-7 day rental period. When you check out you just leave it with their bell captain.

This is a neat trick I read about on vegasmadeeasy.com which has a section on Getting Around.

With a scooter you can stay anywhere you want. Also, walking and or scooting is sometimes the fastest way to get around when traffic backs up anyway.

If you get the small models, they can go up to 4.5mph. The big land cruisers can go up to 7 mph which means she can pull away from you unless you are spry.

Cirque shows are amazing. If you have the budget, KA and O are the best in Vegas. Mamma Mia! is more empty headed fun but quite enjoyable.

Been to Vegas once in August. HOT is not the word. It really does bring new meaning. Regardless, you all will have a great time!! Just be mindful of the time you spend outdoors, same as at home that time of year. ;-) Happy travels!

Well in August in Vegas the Temperature gets up to 118...good way to kill off the old gal...wouldn%26#39;t it be better to go in October...Ms Traci

We were there in August a few years ago.

Do stay on the Strip, but it is soooo unbearably hot and sunny outside, I%26#39;d be amazed if you were walking anywhere.

We stayed at the Luxor and got busses up and down the strip, though towards the middle might be better.

I%26#39;d go for the best deal at the most luxurious that you can; it doesn%26#39;t matter where really, in my opinion, as long as it%26#39;s on the Strip.

Quite a few of the hotels are joined by walkways so you can get through them without venturing outdoors.

It was lovely to swim into the evening, so there is one benefit to the heat.

I wouldn%26#39;t want to be in Vegas in August and I%26#39;m considerably younger than 85. I would strongly urge you to reconsider your travel dates.

I would recommend either Bally%26#39;s or Paris. They are connected so you would not have to go outside. If you are going any distance, you can always take a taxi. It does get very hot obviously, but if you plan your traveling in Vegas, it is very doable, especially since you describe your mother as a ';youthful'; 85.

    Las Vegas 40th Birthday!

Hi all, I%26#39;m off to Las Vegas in July for the first time, and would be really grateful for any tips on Etiquette at the gaming tables......Don%26#39;t want to make myself look like a complete wally! So any tips would be greatly appreciated (can only play black jack and roulette oh and slots if that counts). Also as I am there for a week I would like to visit a working ranch nearby.....One more thing would like a recommendation for a fine dinning restaurant there as it will be my birthday whilst I%26#39;m in Vegas, staying at the Bellagio so anything nearby would be good, so I can stagger back to my room!

    Las Vegas 40th Birthday!

I think a good rule of thumb for table game etiquette is similar to dining table etiquette -- when in doubt, watch what other people are doing. But here are a couple of tips to get you started: never try to hand money directly to a dealer; place it on the table. Never try to buy chips when the dealer is in the middle of dealing or paying out. Don%26#39;t touch your cards if they are dealt face up (some black jack games). Don%26#39;t pick up your cards until the dealer indicates you may. In some places and games, the dealer puts a ';Dealer'; disc down on the cards in front of him; in some games, the dealer pushes the cards towards you; sometimes the dealer just makes a gesture. Don%26#39;t be afraid to ask the dealer if you are not sure.

You might be more comfortable, at least in the beginning, playing in the morning when the tables are less crowded.

I%26#39;m sorry but I cannot help you with your other questions.

    Have fun!!!

    Las Vegas 40th Birthday!

The previous poster is right that if you are unsure of yourself, you should start off playing in the morning when it is less crowded and the dealers will be able to help you more.

At blackjack, I would advise against sitting at third base (the seat all the way on the left) because some players think that person%26#39;s play more greatly affects the dealer%26#39;s chance of busting. This is total nonsense, but they still believe it. Also, it is considered good manners to wait until the shuffle before putting your money down to enter the game (though you can and should claim your seat right away.) I strongly advise you to avoid playing at any tables where blackjack pays 6:5 (indicated by a sign). This is a rip-off and it is worth it to look for a table with a normal (3:2) blackjack pay. Also, be wary of ';side bets'; such as Match the Dealer or Lucky Ladies. Throw a dollar on them if you must, but remember the odds on these bets are very bad no matter how many times you think you see other players winning them. You can practice your basic blackjack strategy for free online at hitorstand.net.

At roulette, the most important pieces of etiquette are these: Don%26#39;t try to place any bets ';late'; after the croupier has called ';no more bets';. And even more importantly, do NOT try to pick up your winnings, if any, until after the croupier has paid off ALL the bets on the table, or you will be scolded. (We%26#39;ve all done it!) If there are other players at the table, the chips may be flying thick and fast, so just try not to elbow anybody. If you can%26#39;t reach the place where you want to put your chips, it is OK to ask someone to place them for you as long as you%26#39;re very polite about it. Finally, make sure you know what the minimum bet is for the table (it should be posted); the dealer will warn you if you have not made the minimum bet inside or outside, but will get annoyed if you do it over and over again.

    Hope that%26#39;s helpful!

Oh, and the only etiquette I am aware of for slots: Don%26#39;t blow smoke at your neighbor. Don%26#39;t expect to ';save'; a particular machine for yourself if you aren%26#39;t coming back within ten minutes. Don%26#39;t deposit any bodily fluids on the machine at any time.

And, regardless of what game you play, don%26#39;t stiff the cocktail waitresses!

Thanks so much for all your info, I just hope it isn%26#39;t as complicated as it sounds! Never mind if I make a fool of myself, i%26#39;ll just move on to another casino, i%26#39;ll have probabley played the whole strip by the time I need to come home! And don%26#39;t worry Stratton I promise not to stiff the cocktail waitress............Only because I don%26#39;t know what it means : )

I%26#39;m the same as you Amelia-Louise so I always follow my boyfriend%26#39;s lead at the black jack table but as I%26#39;m going without him this weekend the above tips have really helped to refresh my memory!

If you go onto the Bellagio website go to the restaurants section and look under fine dining. Prime always gets good reviews.

You%26#39;ll see other options on there aswell.

If you type las vegas tours into your google search bar you%26#39;ll see loads of tour companies, I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;ve seen working ranch trips, you just need to search through. If you are going on a Virgin package then you%26#39;ll be able to book a trip at the rep%26#39;s meeting.

Have a good time Dotty! Wish I was going this weekend! Can%26#39;t come quick enough for me! Not going on a package, so will have a good old google search. Have fun : )

    Amy-Lou

    ';Stiffing'; means failing to tip.

Don%26#39;t worry, Vegas is full of newbies who%26#39;ve never even seen a casino before. Lots of people don%26#39;t know what they%26#39;re doing.

  • 40th Birthday with a bunch of girl friends

Going to Vegas with 10 of my Best Friends. Would like to see some shows at night/ dance clubs. Lay by the pool and do some spaiing during the day. What would be the best hotel to stay at. Also some of my friends are on a tight budget.

40th Birthday with a bunch of girl friends

If your friends are on a tight budget, then I would check out the Flamingo, great rooms that are very clean, very comfy beds, has one of the better pool on the strip, it is centrally located, so it makes it easy to get around on the strip, you have Margaritaville, CP is across the street. You can go to Harrah%26#39;s website %26amp; check it out to see if it meets your criteria, %26amp; needs for a great stay. The website to go to is Harrah%26#39;s which can help you out for rates %26amp; description %26amp; hotel amenities.

    www.harrahs.com

click on LV, then hotel, then reservation, put your dates in, you can also put all LV hotels to get the rates for all of their properties in Vegas. Hope you have a great 40th B-Day in Vegas with your girl friends.

40th Birthday with a bunch of girl friends

You might want to check out the Paris, the price isn%26#39;t that different from Flamingo or Bally%26#39;s, and the pool isn%26#39;t as crowded.

Wetrug, what do you know that I don%26#39;t? Every time I%26#39;ve ever looked, Paris is at *least* $30/night more than Bally%26#39;s or Flamingo? I would not recommend Paris for someone on a ';tight'; budget, as much as a like it there.

To the OP, MGM Grand might be a good choice for spa, pools, and a nightclub where you won%26#39;t feel too old (Studio 54)

I guess I must have gotten some good deals then.

Did this last year, had a ball!! Heading back tomorrow with one of the friends!!!! As far as hotels...if you go to fatwallet or vegashotelspecials.com you can find some amazing deals!! I have MGM for $89 and $69 this weekend. Last year paid even less there! If you would like recommendations for shows, we went to Hypnosis Gone Wild and had a BLAST!! A little ';risky'; (or perhaps I should say raunchy!'; for the late show, but a riot. Pay the extra $10 for VIP tickets, much better seating and free drinks. Well worth it.

Enjoy your trip and it will be the best birthday ever, I am sure!! Was for me. And remember...forty is the new thirty!!!! Have a ball!!

Wetrug - Either that, or you weren%26#39;t seeing the best prices for Bally%26#39;s and Flamingo!

    Lake Tahoe in May

Will be staying at Tahoe Beach %26amp; Ski Resort May 25-31. Does anyone know about any construction going on?

Also would like to know some day trips %26amp; interesting places to visit. We%26#39;re in our 60%26#39;s so cant%26#39; do a lot of difficult hiking. Will be traveling from Ventura CA so if anyone knows of any stops along the way, it would be appreciated.

    Lake Tahoe in May

I%26#39;d rather not assume which route you are taking from Ventura so you%26#39;ll have to say which roads you will drive on before any stops can be suggested.

Many places in Tahoe will be open on Memorial Day weekend so that%26#39;s good news for you.

You should be able to take a scenic gondola ride out of the village gondola. Great views at the lookout.

Also the Tallac site will be open:

The Taylor visitors center will be opening on Memorial Day weekend:

    phone card vs cell phone

We leave on Sunday (YAY) for our first trip to Vegas. Leaving behind three kids with my SIL, one child is special needs. I tend to call home a lot to make sure he is doing okay and just wanted to know if hotels charge for calls. We are at the excaliber. I know some hotels will charge for any call, local or 800 and some won%26#39;t. Just wondering if it will even be worth trying to save the time off my cell phone or not.

    phone card vs cell phone

    anyone?

    phone card vs cell phone

I use my cell phone all the time so I don%26#39;t pay that close attention to the phone charges. I did notice that most hotels will charge a fee for even a phone card call from the room. If you%26#39;re cell plan is unforgiving for long distance calls, you may want to invest in a prepaid phone with a company that has a fixed rate nationwide. When you are done with it, you can find lots of places that would appreciate it as a donation.

    Thanks Leo!

  • loved reno, will be back!

    Hello everyone!

Let me start by appologizing for not reporting earlier, but we just got so busy with life. Better late than never. Thank you to all who gave us great tips on Reno. Spring Break at the nugget was great. We stayed in the new rooms which were expensive, but we loved the new comfy beds especially since we stayed there for 5 nights. It was a bit noisy with the traffic, but we got used to it. We loved the restaurants at the Nugget, especially Trader Dicks (yum, yum!). The kids loved the pool. We didn%26#39;t gamble much because of the kids, but we had fun when we could.

We had a rental car and really enjoyed exploring the Reno area. I must say, I found the people in Reno and in Nevada in general pretty friendly. The weather was sunny and warm while we were there. We went skiing on Mt. Rose and the kids are official Rosebuds now. We also checked out Virgina City and had a shot of whiskey at the ';Bucket of Blood';. We then went to Carson City and liked it so much we decided to stay the rest of our trip there. We checked out the kids museum and the state museum. Wonderful history and loved our stay in Carson. It was also alot closer to Lake Tahoe. We drove around the lake. What a magnificient ride! It is so beautiful there. How about the drive around Emerald Bay, Yikes! Pretty, but scary. I could go on and on. To round it up, we really enjoyed our stay. We loved the history, the people, the scenery, and the casino atmosphere. Can%26#39;t wait to go back again. We would like to try it in the summer next time.

    loved reno, will be back!

Thanks for the trrip report! Sounds like a good time!

    June 26-30th????

Anyone visiting Vegas June 26-30th? If so, do you know what shows you will be attending? I don%26#39;t think all the show times have been displayed that far in advance. Anything interesting going on at the end of June in Vegas?

    June 26-30th????

    23-7/1, MonteCarlo, Platinum, Rio.

    Love, Sun 6/29.

Desert side trips to be named later.

Based on reasonable hotel pricing, not much is goin%26#39; on. Hit the pool.

    June 26-30th????

I%26#39;ll be there June 24th - July 7th (or later).

Don%26#39;t know what you%26#39;ll find interesting, but the World Series of Poker is going on at the Rio then.

    Jun 29 through Jul 1 - Mirage

That%26#39;s interesting about the WSOP. Thanks

    LL

We%26#39;re going June 29-July 6. During the time you mentioned, we are going to Beatlefest (probably) and seeing Spamalot. Later that week we%26#39;re going to see Love.

Sister D: I could look it up, but what is Beatlefest??? Sounds like something I might be interested in.

    LL

I just found out about it today myself! Here%26#39;s a link: www.thefest.com/fest/2008/Vegas/vegas.php

Apparently they have memorabilia for sale, games, people that knew the Beatles, displays, etc. Looks like a good time!

Goaliechick, are you still going to make it to the Mega on the 24th? I see you are arriving that day.

Dk..I see that you will be in town at the time of the Mega, check out the thread and see if you wold like to join us in any of the activities that are planned for forum members.

    Marge

Yep! June 26 - 30 for me too! I am staying at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay. I have tickets to see LOVE and besides that no big plans. We might go to Rehab at the Hard Rock on Sunday. I know I will visit MAG for some great french onion soup and Buzios for a great martini and crap legs!

    June 23-26 here.

  • En route to Vegas - need some suggestions

Ok, this isn%26#39;t really a Las Vegas question, I just thought I%26#39;d get some ideas from you knowledgable folks.

As part of the flight promotion I%26#39;m using, I have to fly (from Australia) into either Chicago, New York or Boston Airports. I was planning to spend probably a day or 2 in either of these cities before flying to Vegas, but I can%26#39;t decide which one.

    Any tips ??

I%26#39;ve done New York before, but wouldn%26#39;t mind going back. Boston looks like a pretty fun city and I don%26#39;t know much about Chicago, but I head good things.

So if you had 2 days to spend in one of those 3 cities where would you go and why ?

En route to Vegas - need some suggestions

Personally for me, Boston or New York but that%26#39;s because I%26#39;ve been to Chicago - I only live 90 minutes from there. Flight times and prices may be cheaper from Chicago. There%26#39;s enough to do in any of those places to keep you busy for 2 days.

Not sure if that helped or not

En route to Vegas - need some suggestions

I%26#39;ve lived in all those places, and I would choose Boston just for the sheer history of it all. It%26#39;s a lovely, walkable city, with great architecture and a deep sense of its past.

Chicago is a big city, and it%26#39;s a great place to live/work, but I think the options for a tourist are limited (outside of some world class museums).

New York is my favorite but you%26#39;ve already been there.

    Go with Boston.

They%26#39;re all good cities. I agree that Boston is the most walkable of the three, and being smaller, you can experience more of what the city has to offer in a shoter time. When is your trip? Boston is best enjoyed in April-May and September-October. All three cities can be hot and humid in the summer months.

It also depends on your interests. If you like seafood and history, Boston%26#39;s hard to beat. If you like theatre and shopping, New York is unequalled. If you like baseball and classic American foods like pizza and sausage, Chicago might seem like heaven.

    Chicago pizza - bleh.

go for the Windy City-can%26#39;t go wrong, shopping, eating, culture (after you see the Cubs play)

Have been to all 3 and the one I want to go back to is Chicago. Spent a week there and barely scratched the surface: it%26#39;s a lot cheaper than NY too.

I live in Boston and think it%26#39;s a great city, especially if you have an interest in American history. It%26#39;s also an easy city to see a lot of in two days.

Live TR - my first two days in Vegas.

Here%26#39;s a report on my solo two days in LV. Posted as a reply.

Live TR - my first two days in Vegas.

Arrived early Sunday afternoon after my second day of exploring Death Valley. Pleasant drive via Pahrump – first time I’ve come into Vegas by that route.

Painless check-in at the Rio. I hadn’t reserved a Strip view and wasn’t really bothered about getting one. I’d done a little forum research on what room to request and asked for a renovated room in Ipanema Tower (thanks Stratton) which was no problem. More than happy with the room (sorry but I just can’t bring myself to call the Rio standard accommodations “suites”.). In fact at $50 per night it was less than I’d paid for basic motel accommodation at both Tonopah and Beatty whilst on the road to Vegas! Did a little gambling later in the afternoon, but didn’t want to go too crazy before my friend Ray arrives later today. I played a little blackjack and lost about $80 in a couple of hours but had a lot of fun with some crazy Texan guys so it was money well spent as far as I’m concerned.

After heading back to the room to relax for an hour I nipped up to VooDoo Lounge for an early evening cocktail. Been there several times but as I was actually staying at Rio it seemed rude not to check it out again! The view is, of course, still sensational no matter how many times you’ve been there…... :-)

I’d intended to check out RUB BBQ but the Texan guys had checked it out and didn’t rate it. When it comes to anything BBQ related, I was definitely going to bow to their judgement! Instead I went to McFadden’s, the Irish pub. Really good vibe, decent food and I ended up drinking way too much Guinness with a combination of Brits and Canucks. That should really have been it for me but in a drunken haze decided that a visit to the Palms would be a good idea.

I’d had one of those “it’s just across the street” Vegas moments as the walk over to the Palms took around fifteen minutes. I played some three card poker (my game of choice after a few drinks – less brain power required than blackjack!), hit three fives with my second hand and walked away from the table there and then $320 better off. I went to the lounge at the rear of the casino (not certain if it has a name – if you turn around from the front desk and walk straight you come to it) and was flirting disgracefully with the waitress (details of this are very sketchy, but remember – I’m a happily married man!) whilst enjoying a couple of Grey Goose screwdrivers.

I eventually found my way back to the Rio at around 2am. I thought about catching a graveyard poker tournament but the following morning’s spa appointment brought me to my senses.

Yesterday (Monday) I was up at a respectable time and grabbed a little breakfast sat at the bar at All-American Bar %26amp; Grille. I’ve eaten there before but not for breakfast. Very good Western Omelet and some good banter with the bartender. Then it was off to Caesars for my spa reservation at Qua. This was the first of three spa visits for me on this trip and my plan is to post a separate “spa report” describing all three once I’m home. I’ll just say now that Qua was great. I then took a stroll north up the Strip. The exterior of the Mirage where the volcano renovation is going on is seriously ugly! I went to briefly check out Palazzo and it looks as nice as you’d expect and then took advantage of the current free admission to the Guggenheim. I walked back to Caesars to pick up my car and had a good laugh at the poker “room” at O’Shea’s (two tables roped off at the front of the casino – if you’re in the wrong seat you’re virtually sat on the sidewalk!). Picked up my car and went to check out the Atomic Testing Museum. After many Vegas trips I felt that it was about time I went there. Definitely a good diversion for a couple of hours if you want to get a little education into your Vegas time.

I headed back to the Rio and had dinner at the Carnival World Buffet. It’s not as excellent as I remembered from a previous visit but still worthwhile. By now the exertions of the previous evening were staring to catch up with me. I planned to chill in my room for an hour and ended up taking a three hour nap! Geez I’m showing my age, that would have never happened when I was in my 20s! I had originally planned to take one of the Rio shuttles to the Strip but decided to conserve my energy for the rest of the trip so strolled to the Gold Coast for a little $5 blackjack. Good fun atmosphere in the casino with plenty of locals it seemed. Had a fun time at a table with a San Francisco couple with whom I could share opinions about my time in Tahoe and Reno where they’re regular visitors. I lost about $150 but still ahead after the previous night’s three card poker dramas.

I asked about the current situation regarding the Masquerade Show and was told that it was scheduled to start up again in the “third week of May.”

At this stage I’ll answer the often asked question, “Can you have fun when in Vegas solo?” As far as I’m concerned the answer is emphatically “Yes!”

Checked out of the Rio this morning. Checked in at THEhotel and got the desired suite – high floor with Strip view. That’s where I’m sat right now and believe me I could very easily get used to this! I’m very very impressed and I think a return visit to this property with Mrs B will definitely happen sooner rather than later! I’ve a spa reservation (Spa Mandalay) in a couple of hours then have to pick up Ray at the airport at 7.30pm.

That’s when the madness will no doubt really get underway! It’s debatable whether I’ll be able to file any further reports whilst I’m still in Vegas so if that’s the case will do so at the weekend when I’ve recovered!!!!

Live TR - my first two days in Vegas.

Thanks for the great TR Blagger .Those extended naps are becoming more frequent for me too these days; especially after a night on the Guiness. I think being in Vegas for a couple of days on your own would be a blast ; hope the rest of your trip is as good .

great report so far, would love to be in LV now since it is cold and windy here in Irvine CA.

Can you hear the MIX from your room? read tr where people on the higher floors can hear the music in their rooms from the club.

Is the furniture in The Hotel Suites in good condition? how are the beds? I am staying in their regular suite over Thanksgiving, can%26#39;t wait.

    Have fun/

Thanks for checking in, nice ';live'; report. Good luck to you !

Thank you, blagger. I can%26#39;t wait to hear the full report!! Enjoy the rest of your time in Vegas!!! :-)

TIALAURA, the furniture is absolutely fine. No complaints there. Bed seems ok but can%26#39;t really judge that until I%26#39;ve had a night%26#39;s sleep!

Likewise with Mix. I%26#39;ll have to report on that after actually spending a night here when they%26#39;ve actually been open.

Weather very nice, just shy of 80 degrees. Some winds when I got here on Sunday but not now.

    Excellent report, so far Blagger.

    Have a great time.

    Cheers,

Great trip report so far from a Vegas veteran. Glad that you are enjoying THEhotel - I miss it dearly.

Whilst you are at the MB you may consider trying your luck at the Crazy 4 Poker table - this game is easy to play and I think has better odds than 3 card poker. I won $1,000 in am hour%26#39;s time.

Good luck with the rest of the trip.

Great live TR so far. Is the Gold Coast $5 bj 6:5? It was when I was there in January.

    Have fun with Ray.

vv, GC single deck was 6:5 but I found a 3:2 shoe game.

Is the Peppermill north or south of the Sahara or the Riviera? Are either of those casinos worth checking out while we%26#39;re up there?

    Peppermill

It%26#39;s south of the Sahara and literally next door to the Riv.

Yes, they%26#39;re all worth cjecking out if you haven%26#39;t seen them.

    Peppermill

    Does 35 years ago count?

    ;-)

Perhaps not, but still, why not? I mean you%26#39;re right there.

True. Have they been renovated (ever)? I remember I thought they did a great job on the Desert Inn then the next minute it was gone!

I was just wondering if they were Circus Circus divey.

I can%26#39;t speak for the Sahara, but the Riv looks like she had her last make-over in the 90%26#39;s. Not good if you%26#39;re looking for Ocean%26#39;s 11 decor, but the casino looks a lot like the scenes from Casino. So yeah, 90%26#39;s. (or would that be 70%26#39;s/80%26#39;s)

The Riviera is a dive but it%26#39;s just across the Peppermill%26#39;s parking lot. If you need to catch a taxi after drinking a Scorpion or two, the Riviera cab stand is probably your best bet. You have to walk through the casino to get there.

Riviera is not divey like CC. Riviera is just lame. I go there a lot for shows. They have nice showrooms. And then I get out of there. Nothing in the Riv is interesting. The Sahara is a dump but the people there are nice. It%26#39;s a nice older crowd at the Sahara.

Peppermill just south of the Riviera. That%26#39;s a cool place.

I have never been to the Peppermill. Is there a unique but cool bar to have drinks and maybe an appetizer? Do they have a band there?

    1iluvvegas

You want the Fireside Lounge in the Peppermill. I never saw a band but it has a super-cool/ funky/retro atmosphere.

    www.usmenuguide.com/peppermillfireside.html

I can cry whenever anyone mentions the Desert Inn. It was my all time favorite hotel in all of Vegas. I will NEVER forgive the Wynn for taking its place! Never!

I%26#39;ve never seen anyone eat at the bar at the Peppermill. There are two sides, the bar and the diner. The diner is a lot bigger and has huge portions. Good food. The bar is more for couples to get drunk and make out.

    Thanks for the information--nice pics!

    Gold Coast Rooms getting remodel

Sounds like a good move. Now all they need to do is build a cool pool and it would be the perfect place to stay!

    Thank you leo.

Ixnay on the pool! The remodel will raise the prices enough. We can%26#39;t let people think its a cool place to stay or anything. (wink, wink)

  • The luxor..Restore...???

Has anyone been Restore? I am thinking about staying there and read about restore on their website, but it doesn%26#39;t explain too much. Is is a seperate pool or part of the larger pool area? Do you pay a cover to get into the area and then just get drink service? Or do you receieve a cabana? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    The luxor..Restore...???

It%26#39;s a separate pool. The standard cover charge does *not* include a cabana. You would have to reserve that for a much higher price.

  • Flying from New York to Las Vegas - veiw the Grand Canyon

I%26#39;m wondering, when flying from New York to Las Vegas, if anyone is able to view the Grand Canyon from the air?

Flying from New York to Las Vegas - veiw the Grand Canyon

We fly from KC so probably the same route as you. In the summer we come in more over Lake Mead, but in the winter come in more south and over the GC. I always sit on the right side of the plane (facing toward the cabin) and see the strip as we land....ahhhh what a sight ;)

Flying from New York to Las Vegas - veiw the Grand Canyon

Unlikely. You%26#39;d probably be approaching Vegas from the north via Utah rather than going over the canyon. If you%26#39;re really interested in seeing the canyon as part of your flight - and I have, it%26#39;s quite impressive - see if you can get a flight on American that stops in Dallas (their hub.) From Dallas you pretty much go due west and you fly right over the Grand Canyon.

    Buffet Suggestions on the Strip

I%26#39;ll be in Vegas next week, staying @ TI %26amp; would love some suggestions about which buffets are best/ preferred.

I really like seafood, especailly lobster %26amp;/or crab legs (prefer warm with drawn butter), BUT one of oiur gang of four is allergic to shellfish, so it can%26#39;t be a seafood-only buffet.

I%26#39;ve read/ heard that Paris %26amp; Rio are two very good buffets. Those are the only ones I can remember.

As well, we have two passes for the TI buffet, which we%26#39;ll use regardless, but does anyone have any comments on the TI buffet specifically?

    Thanks to all!

    Buffet Suggestions on the Strip

Wynn for good king crab but they are cold. Great varitey and well prepared.

If you are looking for lobster and warm crab your best bet is the Sterling Buffet at Bally%26#39;s.

It%26#39;s a Sunday brunch at $75 per person. They offer good lobster with drawn butter. There is a buffet at Rio where they offer slipper lobster on the buffet and crab with drawn butter. If you pay extra you can get 1/2 of a maine lobster. It%26#39;s all you can eat but it is not the quality of Sterling brunch. It%26#39;s about $38 per person and is called The Village Seafood buffet.

    Buffet Suggestions on the Strip

I forgot to say that all of these buffets have items other than seafood but the Village Buffet has fewer of the other items.

From my research (I%26#39;m also looking into Buffets right now) is that Planet Hollywood, Rio and Paris are a popular choice for top 3, and for a little more also the Wynn.

I%26#39;d love to try the Sterling buffet, but am not in Vegas on a Sunday! Thanks for the suggestions, I%26#39;ll keep PH, Wynn, Paris %26amp; Rio in mind.

Still love to hear any experiences people have had with the TI buffet, though!

    Thanks again!

Ihave had the buffet at TI and it was fine. Nothing mind blowing but clean and fresh. I too am allergic to shellfish and I am married to a HUGE crab leg lover. We never had a problem finding something for both of us. We actually liked the Luxor buffet alot. The price is reasonable. Flamingo is ok. MGM is run of the mill and I feel overpriced.

    Trilang,

Luxor buffet has been recently upgraded. Can you give us a discription?

    Recommendations for best buffets -

    1. Bellagio for breakfast.

    2. Paris for lunch.

    3. Mandalay Bay for dinner. They have fabulous king crab legs and other seafood, and also lots of other ';regular'; food. Delicious!

I have not tried it, but I%26#39;ve heard the TI buffet is small but good. However, you are right next door to what I consider one of the better buffets in Vegas which is Cravings at Mirage. Give it a try for lunch, I think you%26#39;ll be pleased. I also liked Paris (for breakfast) and Rio (for lunch). I have yet to find what I would consider to be good seafood at a buffet in Vegas, but then again I am from a seafood city so my standards are pretty high. The best seafood I%26#39;ve had in Vegas is seared yellowfin at Emeril%26#39;s and Chilean seabass at Cafe bellagio, both of which were excellent.

    Pretty much by acclimation -

Group One - The Wynn. You%26#39;ll pay for the privilege, or if you%26#39;re new to their player%26#39;s club, most likely you will be able to get a reduced rate via points. Always the risk of getting ';taken to the cleaners'; when you%26#39;re playing for comps, however.

Group Two - Planet Hollywood, Paris and Bellagio, in one order or another. All excellent choices. many prefer Paris for breakfast and Spice Market (PH) for later meals, although Bellagio has its hearty fans as well, and deservedly so.

Group Three - Mandalay Bay, Rio and Mirage. I refer only to Rio%26#39;s ';regular'; buffet, not their seafood offering, the latter of which people either love or hate. I personally prefer Mirage of this particular trio. It%26#39;s the newest of any I%26#39;ve listed and I like that they give you a ';map'; of their stations so you don%26#39;t have to wander aimlessly around the various buffet stations.

TI%26#39;s buffet is alright, nothing special, worth going to since you%26#39;re staying there anyways. Harrah%26#39;s across the street is just as good.

We enjoyed the breakfast at Paris, and the coffee was perfect! (great waitress too)

    Advice - hotels

I need your advice, my girlfriends and I are treating ourselves to a much needed pampering weekend. We%26#39;ve been to Vegas before so we%26#39;re familiar with the Strip. Here%26#39;s our question - should we stay at either the Wynn or Palazzo or save 200 bucks and stay at Harrah%26#39;s? None of us have stayed at a real fancy pants hotel so for those of you who have . . . is it worth it?

    Advice - hotels

It is worth staying at the fancier hotels if your aim is luxury and pampering. But sometime keeping the cash will really make a difference in having the best overall experience. If that is the case, split the difference and pick a hotel like Paris or Mirage. You%26#39;ll save a few dollars but will still have a more special experience than you will get at Harrah%26#39;s.

    Advice - hotels

If your idea of ';pampering'; includes pool and spa, I wouldn%26#39;t choose Harrah%26#39;s. Palazzo would be a good choice, or Caesar%26#39;s in an Augustus or Palace Tower Room, or if you want to save money on the room, MGM Grand.

When are you going? The pool at the Palazzo is not finished. I also understand they are having some customer service problems. I would pass on Palazzo till they work out the kinks. The Wynn is great but more than 1/3 of their hotel is having air problems. So if you happen to get a room with crappy air you are out of luck.. and those big windows are a sure bet the sun will glare in and you will have a warm room. Harrahs is not bad but very different from the others you have mentioned. But for the price I would stay there. Any thoughts on Paris or Mandalay Bay? I found great rates there lately and have stayed at both and like them.

I%26#39;ve stayed almost everywhere, and I think your question about whether a fancy hotel is worth it is very interesting.

I would say it is if you%26#39;re in Hawaii or Mexico.

But even though I like high end places, I%26#39;m just as happy at a moderate place in Vegas. There, truly, you don%26#39;t spend that much time in your room.

I%26#39;d take the extra money and use it for a really nice spa treatment.

This is one of those questions that is guaranteed to get a huge variety of responses. If there was an overwhelming consensus one way or the other, then the hotels would reflect that.

I am a huge Wynn fan. The couple hundred dollars I would save by not staying there doesn%26#39;t really mean much after a few days in Vegas (between food, drinks and gambling, the tally runs up pretty quick). So for me, I think it is totally worth it to splurge and stay at Wynn (haven%26#39;t been to Palazzo yet).

LOL, just as Mqq said above, you%26#39;re gonna get a lot of different answers. We%26#39;re big Palazzo fans now after going twice. We liked the Wynn, but honestly wasnt too crazy about the rooms whereas others love them.

Not sure when KK was there, but the pools are now open, although there is a few little cosmetic things to finish, and the service was excellent on both of our trips. The casino itself is brighter and more open than most, so some people either love it or hate it. We liked the fact that it was more spread out, wide aisles, and never smelled smoke the entire time. Cocktail service was perfect the whole time.

Whichever hotel you choose will be nice, considering the choices you mentioned though.

I do like Warmwinds idea of staying somewhere else and pampering yourself with other things too. If you%26#39;re not gonna be in the room all the time, Use the money to do things you%26#39;d enjoy.

Either way, have a great trip!

WYNN is BEAUTIFUL! Every time I walk through the hotel or play in the casino, I wish I could afford to stay!! I think if you%26#39;re going to splurge on luxury this is the time to do it, when you can split the extra cost with your girlfriends! What%26#39;s $200 divided between you and your friends...not much really in Vegas!

Let us know what you choose and if it was worth the extra money (I%26#39;m definitely sure it%26#39;ll be worth it!)!!

    Have a FANTASTIC trip!!

Only you can decide which you would prefer. But I will give you one piece of advice:

No matter what you read on the internet or see in ads, and despite anything your friends may say---in Las Vegas you almost always get EXACTLY what you pay for.

It doesn%26#39;t matter if you are talking about a price that%26#39;s high or one that%26#39;s low, you get what you pay for.

No matter what anyone says the $6.99 buffet is not as good as the one that costs $14.99. You may think it%26#39;s a better value, but you still get what you pay for.

Your stay at Wynn would be very different than one at Harrahs. But only you can decide which type of trip you prefer.

Not worth it to me, but we are all different so it%26#39;s your choice :)

ktinca, I disagree. While ';you get what you pay for'; is true often, to generalize that ignores the many deals and specials that are available. I can get a Celebrity Spa Suite at MGM for $100/night by using a promo code and upgrading at checkin, while someone else who doesn%26#39;t know any better pays $299/night. Which of us ';got what we paid for';? It%26#39;s the same room! Or, I could use a coupon to get a buffet for half-price, while the guy next to me pays full price. Same buffet, which of us ';got what we paid for';?

Finally, it%26#39;s obvious even to a first time visitor that there are many things from restaurants to shows to attractions that are overpriced and do not offer value for your money. If we both go to Spamalot and I get my tickets from the same-day discount booth while you pay top dollar ahead of time for front row seats in a small theater where you can see and hear from every seat, I have got my money%26#39;s worth, but you have overpaid.

    CLS Las Vegas Limousine Company.

    Anyone know anything about them.

    Are they reliable.

    Are they good.

    Anyone used them.

    CLS Las Vegas Limousine Company.

CLS is a very reputable limo service and has a large presence in Vegas. I%26#39;ve used them for towncar and excursion service before and their drivers were very professional. I%26#39;d recommend them.

    CLS Las Vegas Limousine Company.

I used them last week for a trip to Lake Las Vegas. I did not choose them, it was arranged by the concierge at our hotel. I didn%26#39;t talk to the company.

The driver picked us up at 11am and we were scheduled for 2 hours. The limo was nice, although nothing special, and the driver was a nice older gentleman supplementing his retirement. He knew the area very well, and took us on a tour around the lake, describing some celebrities homes and showing us points of interest.

Then he dropped us off at Ritz-Carlton so we could walk through the shopping village and have lunch. On the way back I asked him to stop at the Las Vegas sign, and he gladly took pictures.

We kept him almost 3 hours, and the cost was $72/hr, which was added to our hotel bill. BTW: The concierge did say they had a towncar at a lower rate.

We were very pleased and I would recommend them.

    Wizard Of Oz Slots

    Hi all

We are staying at The Wynn in the summer and would like to know what hotels have the WOO slots in them now. I think from memory last year, we played at Caesars.

    Thanks

    Bernie

    Wizard Of Oz Slots

All the Harrah%26#39;s properties, Station properties, and 4Q downtown had them when we were there in Feb...can%26#39;t remember other casinos at the moment.

    Wizard Of Oz Slots

I was there a week ago, and from my memory here are some of the places that (I%26#39;m pretty sure) currently have them:

    Wynn

    Stratosphere

    Planet Hollywood

    MGM

    NYNY

    Osheas

    Bills

    Harrahs

    (pretty much anybody mid strip)

We saw them in most casinos but only a few at each. I had fun playing Wiz slots for a while. I loved the good witch feature.

We were at Silverton last night and they have them. Those have kicked Wheel of Fortune out of first place for me!

Las Vegas Hilton has a couple.

Red Rock has a bank of 4 near their bingo hall and a bank of 3 someplace else that I can%26#39;t remember.

Suncoast has a bank of 4 near their escalators.

The last time I checked the progressive just poked its head over the $1M mark.

TI also has a couple, they are the same area as the Top Gun machines

Looking for info on these two hotels. Posted in Mesquite forum, but I think they%26#39;re all asleep over there.

Virgin River Hotel and Casino and Oasis Resort and Casino. Price caught my eye and we%26#39;re just passing thru. Is it a ';you get what you pay for'; or worth the one night stop over? Just looking for clean!!!!

    Mesquite?

    Hi

Stayed one night in Mesquite the other year and went by the TA guide. So we stayed at Casablanca. We did not pay that much from what I can remember. It was a clean bright hotel with a nice pool area, it had much better reviews than the two you have mentioned.

    Clive

    Mesquite?

We haven%26#39;t stayed yet in Mesquite but have been there several times...if you play golf, you have some pretty courses there and Casablanca is the nicest of the facilities.

Again I can%26#39;t speak for the hotel rooms but wouldn%26#39;t hesitate staying at any of them based on the casino and property cleanliness we%26#39;ve seen there.

I personally have never stayed there, but my parents did a couple years ago and had reservations booked through Virgin River and after staying one night they left because it was so dirty and uncomfortable. They ended up staying at the Oasis and said it was much better!

Just one question though, are you staying there on your way to Las Vegas or leaving Las Vegas? Both my parents said, to them, it was a waste to stop and stay in Mesquite. It%26#39;s worth the hour drive to just get into Las Vegas and stay there.

Hope you have a great time!

That%26#39;s too bad about your parents stay, Kenadie and again haven%26#39;t stayed there...but we%26#39;ve been in all the casinos there and thought they were very clean.

    kenadie,

We%26#39;re actually flying into Vegas late and heading to Zion. We%26#39;re out there for two weeks visiting the Nat%26#39;l Parks and hiking all over. We%26#39;re set to do a rim to rim hike in the Grand Canyon for 5 days to finish it up!!

Needed something just for a night to crash before we head out the next morning and pick up supplies. Becasue of the time change coming from East to West coast we didn%26#39;t want to drive the 3 hours to Zion. It would be 2:00am our time and that%26#39;s a long day!!

Thanks all of you for your help....appreciate it!!

    SJG

I have stayed at Casablanca -- the previous post was right the rooms are bright and very clean and the pool is very nice. They also had a very nice coffee shop there with reasonable prices.

Parents stayed at oasis and said the room was nice as well. however they spent their time at casablanca.

Stayed there once and never again. Very dirty rooms, door didn%26#39;t close, tv was not working, bathroom dirty, stained carpet. Smokiest casino i have ever set foot in. I think we only paid $25 and still felt cheated.

I have stayed at the Oasis hotel. Just a couple of nights a while back. The room was just fine, nothing special but clean. Casablanca is a nicer property, but it was fully booked when I was there. I think Mesquite is quite a nice community and has some very exceptional golf courses. We are even considering buying a property there.

Forgot to mention: i was talking about Virgin River Casino.

We visited Oasis in Mesquite when on a mini-trip to Zion. It was ok - the casino was pretty smoky. Has some very inexpensive deals to look out for!

Since returning home, friends have suggested Eureka so we may try that next time, I%26#39;ve yet to see how the room rates compare. www.eurekamesquite.com

We enjoyed our mini-break in Mesquite, mostly because we needed a break from driving, I think!

I%26#39;m pretty sure the Roy%26#39;s in Hawaii do not have the great value prix fixe menu that the US locations do...I%26#39;ve eaten at Roy%26#39;s in Orlando and Dallas and they were both identical in look (layout and decor) and food.

    'O' tickets...

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting tickets to %26#39;O%26#39; for this evening? My mom just called from Vegas and said that Bellagio is sold out for tonight%26#39;s show and she really wanted to go. I guess she didn%26#39;t realize that they were such a hot comodity or she%26#39;d have purchased them in advance. Any other venues she could try?

    'O' tickets...

She could go to the box office close to curtain time and see if there are any no shows or people who turn in their tickets. Cirque tickets are refundable so she might get tickets for someone who changed their mind, got sick or just doesn%26#39;t show.

    'O' tickets...

I%26#39;ll have her give that a try, thanks.

They usually have a ';standby'; line. Not sure when they start to line up for it but she may want to find out. I have seen several people in line when I have been by there.

where to buy the cheapest O tickets - i m going may 3,4,5,6 - please advise.

There are no cheapest places to buy them. You get them at the Bellagio ticket office or online or at Ticketmaster.

rajthebam - O is still one of the most popular shows in Vegas. You will not find discounts on them at this time. You%26#39;ll want to buy them in advance if you want to be sure to get ticket.

    Sushi Suggestions???

Check out Nobu at Hard Rock.

    Best is a relative term.

For value, I usually go for places like Makino/Todai. Wide selection, relatively ok sushi/sashimi. It satisfy the cravings.

For better quality, a la carte sushi in general is better. Many neighborhood sushi places if you catch them on the day that they received their supplies, that is the best. High end sushi places in hotels are generally good but pricey.

My favorite is the giant clam (geoduck). When it is fresh, it has a sweet taste and nice and crunchy. I dont usually eat rolls (might eat an occasional hand roll).

It%26#39;s true that ';best'; is subjective. I like Nobu because it is always fresh and has consistant quality. It has always been highly regarded as good sushi among the offerings on or near the strip. There are others but Nobu is among my top three.

Here is a link to their menu.

    www.hardrockhotel.com/las-vegas/dining/nobu/

I think I am having memory blips today. I wanted to add that Nobu is pricey so if you would like to spend a little less try Shibuya at MGM. I have know sushi haters that were converted by dining there.

The best Sushi is at Ichiban in Bally%26#39;s

The best sushi is Okada at the Wynn followed very closely by Nobu at Hard Rock. Fatty tuna is fantastic at Okada and Nobu%26#39;s jalapeno yellowtail and miso black cod have been copied by everyone else but not to perfection like Nobu.

Overall best value is Sen of Japan. It is owned by the former sushi chef at Nobu. Unlike Nobu which is single piece pricing, you get 2 pieces per order.

Depending on what is available, the Omakase at Okada and Nobu will run $100-$150. Omakase at Sen is $50 although not as authentic an Omakase as the first two.

If you are a big eater, I prefer Makino%26#39;s buffet a bit over Todai%26#39;s. Makino%26#39;s Summerlin location just closed however. For rolls, I Love Sushi is a bit of a drive but very good.

    Okada

    Social House

    Nobu

    I agree with flyinthesoup

    Mirage vs TI

I have a reservation at both places....(will cancel one) We have a better room reserved at TI but I want to do a lot of pool time and I heard Mirage has the better pool. I%26#39;m torn. any recent experiences will be appreciated. Thanks

    Mirage vs TI

Not terribly recent . . . but we%26#39;ve stayed at both (two and three years ago). I prefer Mirage . . . not only because of the pool area, but the property as a whole, location, and dining choices.

    Mirage vs TI

Tough choice! The rooms at TI are nicer than the unrenovated rooms at Mirage. The bathrooms are larger at TI. But if a good pool is important, then Mirage wins hands down. I have stayed at both and I can honestly say that I would be very happy either place. The pool at TI is OK, but it is very small. It gets very crowded. I never felt crowded at Mirage, even when it was very busy. I do like the smaller feel of TI though. Like I said....tough choice! LOL!

Once the Mirgae rooms are done, it would be Mirage hands down-

The rooms at TI are currently a bit nicer, and have great beds.

I personally wouldn%26#39;t buy this. A lot of fun in Vegas is found doing unplanned stuff and I wouldn%26#39;t want to to be worried whether or not I was going to get value out of a pass like this and planning my trip around doing enough of the included attractions.

    las vegas power pass?

Agree--plus, lots of the things on the Pass can be discounted through coupons you can grab in Vegas, fun books, etc.

I%26#39;d thought about it, too, but unless you want to spring for the multiple-day pass, it seems like too much to do in too short of a time, which could harsh your spontaneity.

    I agree with the others.

Every time I plan to do something in Vegas once I arrive I change my mind.

    If you don%26#39;t purchase:

You can find discount coupons for most of the attractions included in the power pass in the free Vegas tourist magazines found in most hotels and shops.

thanks everyone - i will save my money!! great advice!!

has anyone ever bought one though? I am going aswell and am only interested in the %26#39;skipping the queues%26#39;.

Does that apply to Star Trek:The Experience?

Lines for Vegas attractions are invariably never too horrific. If you%26#39;re thinking of what you can get at busy times in theme parks then it%26#39;s never anything remotely as bad as that.

You can almost always get Star Trek tickets at the discount booths. Also, you can often pick up coupons in and around the Hilton. You shouldn%26#39;t ever end up paying full price.

Have just returned from Vegas. Didn%26#39;t buy the pass as the place is littered with coupon booklets.

Every hotel shop has free entry cards to night clubs lying around. The NEW YORK, NEW YORK handed out free entry cards for Coyote Ugly as soon as we entered. Every other bar gives you 2 for 1 drink vouchers.

While you are gambling -even on 1 cent machines- drinks are free!

We even got two free tickets to a Cirque de Soleil show just because they couldn%26#39;t get rid of them.

    The Power Pass is overrated.

Have fun and unless you gamble it all away there is a lot of fun to be had for very little money.

    ';We even got two free tickets to a Cirque de Soleil show just because they couldn%26#39;t get rid of them.';

Which show and on what night of the week?

    Zumanity on Tuesday the 15th.

We were walking through New York New York at 22.27 (i know this cause the guy was like: it starts in 3 minutes)just past the pizza place next to the entrance.

I know we were lucky but the guy said he worked for the company and they told him to give away the tickets. He had started off with 5.

  • Best Time to book Vegas Trip

I am going to Vegas in November around 22nd. I was wondering when the best time to book would be? Am I best to book it now as there are some good deals just now or would I be best to wait until nearer the time?

Best Time to book Vegas Trip

I always find the best deals are around three months in advance that is when the hotels update their deals. Go onto the hotels you are interested in staying and signup for their email promotions they really pay off.

I always book airfare seperate and get your alerts activated on the airfare sites. The airfare right now is just going to keep going up I think with the price of fuel. So if you find a good deal for air jump on it!!

    Cheers!!

This far out, how you book is more important than when. If you see a hotel you like and a hotel that fits your range, go ahead and book but go direct with the hotel and make sure you can cancel it. That close to Thanksgiving, rates tend to fall 2-3 months out so you may be able to score a better deal later.
