Las Vegas 40th Birthday!

Hi all, I%26#39;m off to Las Vegas in July for the first time, and would be really grateful for any tips on Etiquette at the gaming tables......Don%26#39;t want to make myself look like a complete wally! So any tips would be greatly appreciated (can only play black jack and roulette oh and slots if that counts). Also as I am there for a week I would like to visit a working ranch nearby.....One more thing would like a recommendation for a fine dinning restaurant there as it will be my birthday whilst I%26#39;m in Vegas, staying at the Bellagio so anything nearby would be good, so I can stagger back to my room!

I think a good rule of thumb for table game etiquette is similar to dining table etiquette -- when in doubt, watch what other people are doing. But here are a couple of tips to get you started: never try to hand money directly to a dealer; place it on the table. Never try to buy chips when the dealer is in the middle of dealing or paying out. Don%26#39;t touch your cards if they are dealt face up (some black jack games). Don%26#39;t pick up your cards until the dealer indicates you may. In some places and games, the dealer puts a ';Dealer'; disc down on the cards in front of him; in some games, the dealer pushes the cards towards you; sometimes the dealer just makes a gesture. Don%26#39;t be afraid to ask the dealer if you are not sure.

You might be more comfortable, at least in the beginning, playing in the morning when the tables are less crowded.

I%26#39;m sorry but I cannot help you with your other questions.

Have fun!!!

The previous poster is right that if you are unsure of yourself, you should start off playing in the morning when it is less crowded and the dealers will be able to help you more.

At blackjack, I would advise against sitting at third base (the seat all the way on the left) because some players think that person%26#39;s play more greatly affects the dealer%26#39;s chance of busting. This is total nonsense, but they still believe it. Also, it is considered good manners to wait until the shuffle before putting your money down to enter the game (though you can and should claim your seat right away.) I strongly advise you to avoid playing at any tables where blackjack pays 6:5 (indicated by a sign). This is a rip-off and it is worth it to look for a table with a normal (3:2) blackjack pay. Also, be wary of ';side bets'; such as Match the Dealer or Lucky Ladies. Throw a dollar on them if you must, but remember the odds on these bets are very bad no matter how many times you think you see other players winning them. You can practice your basic blackjack strategy for free online at hitorstand.net.

At roulette, the most important pieces of etiquette are these: Don%26#39;t try to place any bets ';late'; after the croupier has called ';no more bets';. And even more importantly, do NOT try to pick up your winnings, if any, until after the croupier has paid off ALL the bets on the table, or you will be scolded. (We%26#39;ve all done it!) If there are other players at the table, the chips may be flying thick and fast, so just try not to elbow anybody. If you can%26#39;t reach the place where you want to put your chips, it is OK to ask someone to place them for you as long as you%26#39;re very polite about it. Finally, make sure you know what the minimum bet is for the table (it should be posted); the dealer will warn you if you have not made the minimum bet inside or outside, but will get annoyed if you do it over and over again.

Hope that%26#39;s helpful!

Oh, and the only etiquette I am aware of for slots: Don%26#39;t blow smoke at your neighbor. Don%26#39;t expect to ';save'; a particular machine for yourself if you aren%26#39;t coming back within ten minutes. Don%26#39;t deposit any bodily fluids on the machine at any time.

And, regardless of what game you play, don%26#39;t stiff the cocktail waitresses!

Thanks so much for all your info, I just hope it isn%26#39;t as complicated as it sounds! Never mind if I make a fool of myself, i%26#39;ll just move on to another casino, i%26#39;ll have probabley played the whole strip by the time I need to come home! And don%26#39;t worry Stratton I promise not to stiff the cocktail waitress............Only because I don%26#39;t know what it means : )

I%26#39;m the same as you Amelia-Louise so I always follow my boyfriend%26#39;s lead at the black jack table but as I%26#39;m going without him this weekend the above tips have really helped to refresh my memory!

If you go onto the Bellagio website go to the restaurants section and look under fine dining. Prime always gets good reviews.

You%26#39;ll see other options on there aswell.

If you type las vegas tours into your google search bar you%26#39;ll see loads of tour companies, I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;ve seen working ranch trips, you just need to search through. If you are going on a Virgin package then you%26#39;ll be able to book a trip at the rep%26#39;s meeting.

Have a good time Dotty! Wish I was going this weekend! Can%26#39;t come quick enough for me! Not going on a package, so will have a good old google search. Have fun : )

Amy-Lou

';Stiffing'; means failing to tip.

Don%26#39;t worry, Vegas is full of newbies who%26#39;ve never even seen a casino before. Lots of people don%26#39;t know what they%26#39;re doing.
